Los mitos son potentes relatos que, además de reforzar la identidad de la cultura en la que se insertan, pueden servir para explicar el mundo y la naturaleza humana.

Nuestra investigación pretende ahondar en el imaginario mitológico griego, como precursor y co-formador de la cultura occidental, para extraer una serie de relatos que puedan ser reinterpretados desde la producción pictórica, con una visión contemporánea, a través de una estética digital y usando elementos icónicos propios de las redes sociales, y mediante la creación de grandes polípticos a modo de multipantalla y en clara alusión al retablo religioso, para resaltar el magnetismo y el aurático espacio que ocupan estos mitos en nuestro patrimonio cultural-identitario y, a la vez, aludir a la idea de la representación de la realidad a través del cuadro-ventana-pantalla.

Caída libre es la continuación de la investigación iniciada con La falsa promesa (2022-2023), que reinterpretaba el mito de Prometeo y el uso distópico del progreso científico-tecnológico, con el consecuente desastre de la apertura de la caja de Pandora. En este segundo retablo, pretendemos estudiar la conexión entre el mito de Ícaro y la ambición, la arrogancia y la caída de lo más alto, en particular en el contexto de las redes sociales, mediante la búsqueda de una supuesta libertad.

Para la generación de imágenes, se ha usado la cámara fotográfica y la del móvil, la apropiación de imágenes en red y DALL·E 2, el sistema de IA de acceso abierto capaz de crear imágenes realistas partiendo de descripciones lingüísticas. Tras su tratamiento digital, las composiciones generadas se han reproducido al óleo sobre lienzo.

Dado que se nutre del imaginario digital, del meme, del emoji, del sticker y del icono, esta investigación se ancla en la más absoluta actualidad y en la cultura popular de Internet, a la vez que la combina con una tradición cultural identitaria clásica academicista y consagrada tanto en el tema como en el estilo pictórico. De esta forma, se persigue generar una potente paradoja visual que manifieste las contradicciones propias de la subjetividad europea en un mundo posmoderno, capitalista, digital y en constante crisis.

Caída libre estuvo expuesto en las Reales Atarazanas de Valencia entre el 28 de septiembre y el 19 de noviembre de 2023 a tenor de la exposición PAM! PAM! 23.

Myths are powerful tales that, besides reinforcing the identity of the culture of which they form a part, can help to explain the world and human nature.

Our research aims to study the Greek mythological imagination as the precursor and contributor to Western culture to extract a series of tales that can be re-interpreted as visual art, with a contemporary vision, through digital aesthetics. For this we used the iconic elements belonging to the social networks and creating large polyptychs in the form of multi-screens in a clear allusion to religious altarpieces to underline the magnetism and auratic space occupied by these myths in our cultural heritage, while at the same time alluding to the representation of reality through the picture-window- screen.

Free Fall is the continuation of the investigation we began with The False Promise (2022-2023), which re-interpreted the myth of Prometheus and the dystopic use of the scientific-technological revolution and the disaster that happened after opening Pandora’s box. In this second altarpiece we aimed to study the connection between the myth of Icarus and ambition, his arrogance and fall from the highest, especially in the context of the social networks, by means of the search for a presumed liberty.

To generate the images, we used both cameras and mobile phones and appropriated photos from the Internet and DALL-E 2, the open-access AI system that can create realistic images from verbal descriptions. After digital treatment, the compositions generated were reproduced by oils on canvas.

Since it was nourished by the digital imagination, memes, emoticons, stickers and icons, this study is firmly anchored in the absolute present and popular Internet culture. It combines this with the classic, academic identitarian culture consecrated in both the topic and its pictorial style. In this way, we aimed to generate a powerful visual paradox to show the contradictions of European subjectivity in the post-modern, capitalist, digital world, involved in constant crisis.

Free Fall was exhibited at the Royal Shipyards of Valencia from September, 28th to November, 19th, 2023 for the exhibition PAM! PAM! 23.
